Happy National Oranges & Lemons Day! We’re celebrating these fresh citrus fruits by sharing recipes for making your own Limoncello and Blood Orangecello, perfect to sip at home or to give away as sweet gifts! We have two different recipes to share, one from our team member Nicole Portwood and one from our friend Kirsten Meeks. Each recipe follows a slightly different method, so experiment with both to see which produces the right flavor profile for you! Both recipes start with a simple infusion of citrus rinds soaked in Tito’s Handmade Vodka – just be sure to remove as much of the white pith as possible or you’ll end up with a bitter cocktail. The citrus-infused vodka is then mixed with a simple syrup to round out the liqueur’s sweet profile. You can read all about Limoncello’s rich history here. The finished product can be sipped straight or mixed with your favorite sparkling water. Enjoy!

     Limoncello & Blood Orangecello

Limoncello

Recipe from Nicole Portwood

Ingredients:

  • 7-10 lemons
  • approx. 2 cups Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water

Directions:

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, skin 10 lemons. Remove any excess white pith with a paring knife.
  2. Place the lemon rinds in a glass jar and cover with approximately 2 cups of Tito’s Handmade Vodka. After about 4 days, strain the infusion with a cheesecloth.
  3. To make the simple syrup, bring 3 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water to a boil, then allow to cool. Once the syrup has cooled, combine the infusion and the simple syrup.

Blood Orangecello

Recipe from Kirsten Meeks

Ingredients:

  • 9 blood oranges
  • approx. 2 cups Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water

Directions:

  1. Begin by peeling the rind off 8 of the blood oranges using a vegetable peeler. Remove any excess white pith with a paring knife.
  2. Place the orange rinds in a glass jar and add enough Tito’s Handmade Vodka to cover (about 2 cups). Seal and let infuse for 1 week.
  3. To make the simple syrup, mix 2 cups of sugar with 2 cups of water and zest of 1 blood orange. Bring to a boil for 1 minute then allow to cool. After the syrup has cooled, mix with the juice of all 9 blood oranges.
  4. Mix the infused vodka and simple syrup together in a 1:1 ratio.
