Welcome to the second installment of our Meet the Maker program! We’re continuing to celebrate the American craft movement by highlighting the incredible artisans in this country and the beautiful things they are making. This quarter, we have partnered with Tami from Blind Pig Flask Co. in North Carolina to produce some of the most beautiful flasks we’ve ever seen.

Tami hand-stitches each and every one of her custom flasks. You can see some of her incredible work at her website. She has her own designs, but also creates beautiful pieces using keepsakes from her clients. We’ve had a wonderful time getting to know Tami, and the flasks she created for us are absolutely gorgeous.

Here’s a bit more about Tami and Blind Pig Flask Co.:

I was the child who would pack a suitcase and run away from home. After getting a short ways down our county road my sister would ride up on her bike to deliver a message from my mom that she needed me to come home and help her rearrange the living room furniture. I’m not sure which my mom had figured out first; that I was freakishly strong for a 6 year old or that I had a love for decorating. Whichever the case, it always worked, back I’d go to help move the huge console tv! I ended up doing interior design work for a number of years.

As long as I can remember I have made things and I fell in love with hand stitched leather when I discovered Henry Beguelin hand stitched leather handbags. I remember studying every stitch and loving the fact that it wasn’t exactly perfect. I immediately went to a leather supplier and I’ve been working with and hand stitching leather ever since.

Re-purposing items that would otherwise be discarded into useful pieces of art has become a passion of mine. I feel very honored when someone brings me a piece of memorabilia or treasured heirloom and they put their trust in me to put it on a one of-a-kind flask or leather cuff or incorporate it into a necklace. I also transform old wool sweaters into dog coats and old wool clothing into dog beds.

I live in the small mountain village of Cashiers, North Carolina. I relate to John Muir’s quote “The mountains are calling and I must go”. I am truly grateful every day to be doing something creative, working in an awesome studio overlooking a lake and Whiteside Mountain.
