April is National Adopt a Greyhound Month! These well behaved pups are easy to fall in love with and make great companions, so we turned to friend and Greyhound expert Catelyn Silapachai for information about adopting. To celebrate, we’re sharing some of our favorite Greyhound cocktail variations all month long. Read Catelyn’s guest blog below, and raise a glass with us as we toast these majestic creatures.

Greyhounds are famous for being one of the fastest land animals, but they also make great pets. After they retire from their racing careers, they can be adopted as pets through local greyhound rescue organizations. They have a few stand-out characteristics that make them desirable as an indoor pet. For example, they are gentle and laid-back, generally content to sleep most of the day. They have a long lifespan for a big dog breed, living on average 12-15 years. They actually require much less exercise than most people think because they’re bred for sprinting, not endurance. Lastly, Greyhounds are quite clean, and groom themselves like cats. They are consistently rated one of the best dogs for apartment living due to their cleanliness, tendency not to bark, and gentle nature. To learn more about retired racing greyhounds as pets, contact one of the three greyhound adoption groups in Austin. They will be able to answer any questions about adoption, or provide insight into other ways to help these gentle giants like fostering or volunteering.
